The style of dress for Caroling George Washington was taken from the famous painting of Washington crossing the Delaware on Christmas Eve, 1776. The General is holding a riding crop, echoing Thomas Jefferson's statement that Washington was "The best horseman of his age, and the most graceful figure that could be seen on horseback."
